Millennials are stepping into leadership with heart, courage, and clarity — reshaping work, healing generational wounds, and leading the change we’ve been waiting for in the workplace.
In a powerful reunion on The Great Connect podcast, long-time friends and former colleagues Carrie Allen, founder of The Human Array, and Amy Pons of Unlock the Magic pull back the curtain on the millennial experience in the workplace, unpacking the contradictions, calling out the generational dysfunction, and offering a vision for what’s possible when millennials stop shrinking and start leading on their own terms.
You’re Not Too Much. You’re the Shift.
If you’ve ever been labeled “too emotional,” “too intense,” or “too much,” consider this your reminder:
Your fire isn’t a flaw. It’s fuel.
Millennials stepped into the workplace with vision, heart, and a hunger to lead, only to be met with outdated expectations, generational bias, and a chronic underestimation of their worth.
My passion, my fire, the way I move in this world, was always misconstrued in the workplace. I was stuck between, 'Damn Amy, you're crushing it' and 'Be less, you're too much.' I'm like, can I just be fucking big and get shit done? And the answer was no. —Amy Pons, Founder of Unlock the Magic
Back then, corporate conversations weren’t about how to empower a rising generation. They were about how to manage them.
Authenticity was inconvenient.
Emotion was a liability.
And leadership meant compliance, not courage.
But things are shifting. And for those willing to question the rules, a quiet revolution is underway. Not by working harder, but by showing up as who we really are.

The Hero Generation: A Call to Rise
According to generational theory, millennials are the “Hero Generation”, those born to lead during times of upheaval and transformation.
This is a generation that came of age during the 2008 recession, entered adulthood under the weight of economic instability, and stepped into the workforce just as the world began to digitize, globalize, and unravel in new and unexpected ways.
But those collective challenges didn’t break them. They forged them. Out of hardship came grit, resilience, and a deep desire to do things differently.
Millennials don’t just want a job. They want meaning. They want to feel aligned. They want to contribute to something real. They ask hard questions, challenge outdated systems, and are tired of being told to stay small or play by rules that no longer serve.
For many, this period marked the beginning of a quiet but powerful awakening. As the old models of success started to crack, space opened up for a new kind of leadership. One that isn’t built on ego or hierarchy, but on authenticity, compassion, and courage.
The hero's journey is not rainbows and butterflies. The hero has to go through the hard part, to learn a whole bunch of stuff, to then figure out what they're gonna do to create change in the world. And that is the millennial generation. —Carrie Allen, Founder of The Human Array
Millennials are stepping up, not by pushing harder, but by showing up differently. And in doing so, they’re redefining what it means to lead.

Creating a New Way to Lead
What does it actually mean to lead differently?
It starts with empathy. With emotional intelligence. With the courage to stop performing a version of professionalism that asks you to leave your humanity at the door.
For many millennials, leadership isn’t about climbing the ladder. It’s about changing where the ladder leads, and who’s even invited to climb.
The truth is, so many workplace cultures are built on unspoken rules rooted in intergenerational trauma: suppress your emotions, protect your position, don’t ask questions, and definitely don’t show weakness.
Millennials have seen firsthand the harm that model causes to individuals, teams, and entire organizations. And they’re choosing another path.
Every person in a leadership position in the Boomer or X generation was not interested in making anything better for those who came after them. It was more about self-preservation. Women who I would look up to would say, 'You need to stop crying. You have it better than I did.' —Amy Pons, Founder of Unlock the Magic
They’re not here to replicate what didn’t work. They’re here to rebuild.
To imagine a workplace where wellbeing is a strength, not a side note. Where collaboration takes precedence over competition. Where hard questions are welcomed, not silenced. And where future generations (like Gen Z) can thrive without first having to unlearn everything their predecessors had to survive.
Don't stay in the way it has been. You know it doesn't feel right. Be human. Be that leader. Allow the feelings to be real. We're people. It's overall wellbeing that makes each of us successful in our own way, which makes us work collectively successfully together. —Carrie Allen, Founder of The Human Array

Millennials in the Workplace: This Is Your Moment
Even when it feels like no one’s listening, your voice matters. Even if you don’t have the title, you can still make a difference. And no, the system wasn’t built for you. That’s the point. You’re here to change it.
This generation wasn’t made to follow the rules. It was made to rewrite them. To question what’s broken. To bring heart back into spaces that forgot how to feel. To build workplaces, businesses, and communities that reflect humanity, not hierarchy.
It's time to rise. You are leaders. You're starting to become the majority of the working individuals in this world, and it's time to create change. We were born for this. —Carrie Allen, Founder of The Human Array
You don’t need to wait for permission. You are the permission. So speak up. Show up. Ask the hard questions. And lead the way you wish someone had led for you.
And if it ever feels too heavy, remember this: you’re not doing it alone. A whole generation is rising alongside you.
