Perimenopause 101: Symptoms, Hormones, and What Every Woman Needs to Know

  • Apr 15
  • 5 min read

A clear, empowering guide to perimenopause—what’s happening in your body, why symptoms show up, and how to navigate this transition with more support, clarity, and confidence.

Perimenopause 101: What’s Actually Happening in Your Body

For something that every woman goes through, perimenopause is surprisingly misunderstood.

Most people think menopause is a moment—hot flashes, mood swings, and then it’s over. But the reality is much more layered.

Perimenopause is the transition leading up to menopause, and it can last anywhere from a few years to over a decade. It’s not a switch that flips—it’s a gradual, often unpredictable hormonal shift that impacts nearly every system in the body.

And for many women, it starts earlier than expected—sometimes as early as the mid-30s.

Perimenopause 101: The Stages (and Why They Matter)

Let’s simplify the timeline:

  • Perimenopause: The transition phase—hormones fluctuate, symptoms appear

  • Menopause: One single day—12 months without a period

  • Post-menopause: The phase that follows (and lasts the rest of your life)

Here’s the key insight: Most symptoms people associate with “menopause” are actually happening during perimenopause.

That’s why so many women feel confused, dismissed, or like something is “wrong”—because no one told them this phase even existed.

Why You Might Feel “Off” (But Can’t Explain Why)

There are now 60+ recognized symptoms of perimenopause.

Some are familiar:

  • Hot flashes

  • Night sweats

  • Sleep disruptions

But many are not:

  • Brain fog

  • Anxiety or mood shifts

  • Heart palpitations

  • Joint pain

  • Itchy skin

  • Burning mouth or dry eyes

And the most common one?

“I just don’t feel like myself.”

That feeling—subtle but persistent—is often the first signal.

It’s Not Just Estrogen—Progesterone Matters Too

When we talk about hormones, estrogen tends to get all the attention.

But in perimenopause, progesterone is often the first to decline—and that shift can have a big impact.

Low progesterone is linked to:

  • Trouble falling or staying asleep

  • Anxiety and racing thoughts

  • Irregular or heavier periods

At the same time, estrogen begins to fluctuate wildly—rising and falling unpredictably.

Together, this creates what many women describe as a kind of internal “storm.”

Why Everything That Used to Work… Doesn’t Anymore

One of the most frustrating parts of perimenopause is this:

You haven’t changed anything—but your body has.

Workouts feel different. Sleep becomes inconsistent. Weight shifts. Stress hits harder.

This isn’t a willpower problem.

It’s a biology shift.

Your hormones were previously doing a lot of the behind-the-scenes regulation—supporting metabolism, mood, sleep, and recovery. As they change, your body needs different inputs to function the same way.

This is why many women benefit from:

  • Prioritizing strength training over excessive cardio

  • Building in rest and recovery days

  • Supporting sleep more intentionally

  • Shifting nutrition toward protein and fiber

Not more restriction—just different support.

Hormones, Stress, and the Nervous System

Perimenopause doesn’t happen in isolation—it overlaps with one of the busiest phases of life.

Careers, kids, aging parents, relationships—it’s a lot.

At the same time, declining estrogen (which is naturally anti-inflammatory and supportive of brain regulation) can make the nervous system more sensitive to stress.

The result?

You may feel:

  • More reactive

  • More overwhelmed

  • More “wired but tired”

This isn’t in your head—it’s in your physiology.

And it’s why simple tools—like breathwork, walking, time outside, or even a few minutes of stillness—can have a real, measurable impact.

Hormone Therapy: What It Actually Is

Despite the name, hormone therapy isn’t about “replacing” hormones back to previous levels.

It’s more like a gentle support system—helping bring hormone levels up just enough to ease symptoms and support the body through the transition.

For some women, it can be life-changing. For others, it may not be the right fit.

The most important thing is this: You deserve to have the conversation.

Because for too long, women have been told to just “push through” this phase—and that’s no longer acceptable.

You’re Not Alone (Even If It Feels That Way)

Right now, over 1 billion women worldwide are in some stage of menopause transition.

And yet, so many feel like they’re navigating it alone.

That’s the real gap—not just information, but conversation.

The more we talk about this, the more we normalize it—and the easier it becomes to recognize what’s happening and ask for support.

A Reframe: This Isn’t the End—It’s a Transition

There’s a powerful shift happening in how we think about this stage of life.

Less about decline.

More about recalibration.

Less about pushing harder.

More about working with your body.

This is a transition into a new phase—one that asks for strength, support, and self-awareness.

And when women are informed and supported through it?

They don’t just get through it. They thrive on the other side.
